NFL Breakout Players For 2010

I’ve officially reached my limit on bad Cubs baseball for the season and have, now, fully immersed myself into football season. You know the baseball season has sucked ass for you when you are counting down to the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio(August 8th on NBC in case you were wondering). Baseball season has been even worse than I imagined because I haven’t subjected myself to the nonsense that goes on at Clark and Addison everyday. I’d be more miserable than the Jersey Shore cast when Angelina showed up in Miami if I watched every Cubs fiasco. Thankfully, the NFL season is here, and I’ve decided to put together a list of the players I think will breakout in 2010. No, this isn’t a fantasy preview. You can go anywhere for that. Plus, I’m horrendous at fantasy football. I should only do a who not to draft article. What I’ve put together is a group of players who are about to become household names. I was thinking of putting together a list of guys who have been arrested, but I’m waiting for later in the season and a couple more screw ups. It’s just a matter of time, you know it. The only question is what will come first, an NFL player arrest or another skanky celebrity sex tape?

The following group of players are a mix of rookies, 2nd-3rd year players, a veteran quarterback who’s battled injuries, and guys who may be under the radar for only another month or so. You’ll notice that there aren’t any Bears on my list. No, this isn’t a mistake. It’s just more proof that Jerry Angelo should be fired– yesterday.

If the Cowboys are to play in the SuperBowl at Jerry World, Felix Jones will need to have a big year.

Felix Jones-RB-Cowboys: With Marion Barber slowing down and showing the wear and tear of his physical style, the door is open for Jones to take the bulk of the carries in Dallas. Jones is a threat to go the distance anytime he touches the ball. 6 touchdowns in 2 years hasn’t been the impact the Cowboys hoped for when they made Jones the 22nd pick in the ’08 draft, but things should change this season. I enjoy the misfortunes of the Cowboys, but this is a dangerous team. I really hope I mush the shit out of them this year.

Darren McFadden-RB-Raiders: It’s insanity to think the Raiders may not be miserable this season, but with the big, fat, lazy, bum no longer quarterbacking, this team could show some life. McFadden has all of the ability to be a stud running back. Now that JaFATus Russell is gone, teams can’t stack the line against the Raiders. Jason Campbell isn’t great, but he’s good enough to keep defenses honest which will help D-Mac. They could also show him pictures of Al Davis between series. That will scare him into running harder.

David Harris-MLB-Jets: I tweeted this week that I thought the Jets are becoming too Hollywood for my liking. Rex Ryan wrote a book, they are doing Hard Knocks, and they have a bunch of guys in the last year of their deals. They are the trendy pick, but I’m not so sure they will be able to handle the pressure. Harris, on the other hand, is an absolute stud. He will become a pro-bowl regular starting this year. His 127 tackles and 5.5 sacks last year were breakout worthy, but this is the year he enters Cheers territory(where everyone knows your name).

By the way…..The Bears could have had Harris in the ’07 draft with the 37th pick they received in the Thomas Jones trade, but they traded that pick. Damn you, Jerry Angelo. Why is he still employed again? That’s right, the Bears don’t know what the Eff they are doing.

Eric Berry-S-Chiefs: The rookie was my favorite player coming into the NFL draft. The Chiefs paid a hefty price to sign him ($34 million guaranteed), but he is in the Ed Reed mold. He can blitz, he can cover backs and receivers, blanket tight ends, and knock your head off if you come across the middle. This kid could be an all-pro player as a rookie.

Jamaal Charles-RB-Chiefs: Charles took over as the starter in week 9 and didn’t disappoint. From that game on, the former 3rd round pick rushed for 1,004 yards and 7 touchdowns. He will be drafted high in fantasy leagues this year, and with fatso running the Chiefs offense(Charlie Weis), he should have a huge year.

Ndamukong Suh-DT-Lions: Suh is another rookie who will make an immediate impact. Dan Wilkinson he is not. The Lions defense will be immensely better with Suh anchoring their line. He has a good head on his shoulders, and will be the face of the Lions defense for years to come.

Jermichael Finley-TE-Packers: The Packers are a legitimate SuperBowl team, and Finley will be a big part of their offense in 2010. He is athletic, strong, and has great hands. Basically, he’s the anti Greg Olsen. Don’t tell The Score’s Zach Zaidman that, though. He has his head up Olsen’s ass so far you’d think he drafted him. Finley will make the pro-bowl this year and will be viewed as a top 5 tight end in football.

Mike Wallace-WR-Steelers: Timbo Slice would probably take me out at pickup basketball if I left Wallace off this list. He had 756 yards and 6 touchdowns last year as the Steelers slot receiver. With Santonio Holmes gone, Wallace should become the Steelers best receiver. It will be tough with Ben Rapelisberger out the first 4 games, but he is a talent. He’s also a hell of a lot better than Hines Ward. Ward runs like he has osteoporosis. He was so slow last year that it took him 4.67 seconds to run a 6 yard slant pattern.

Alex Smith has worked his ass off to get one last chance to prove he's the 49ers quarterback of the future. His hard work is what sports should be all about.

Alex Smith-QB-49ers: I don’t want to mush my favorite teams quarterback, but Smith finally had an off-season where he didn’t have to learn a new system. When you add Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati to the offensive line, a healthy Michael Crabtree, the NFL’s best tight end(Vernon Davis….don’t argue it), and that Frank Gore guy, Smith is poised to lead San Francisco to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Smith came off two injury plagued seasons and produced 18 touchdowns and 60.5% completion percentage last season. The time is now for the 26 year old to prove he can be a legit NFL quarterback. I’m betting on the hard working Smith finally becoming a solid quarterback.

Calais Campbell-DE-Cardinals: Campbell is a 6 foot 8 inch freak who went from zero sacks two season ago to seven last year. The Cardinals will need their defense to be special if they are going to offset the loss of Jesus in cleats(Kurt Warner). The 23 year old should become one of the premiere defensive ends in football this year.

Speaking of the Cardinals…..

Early Doucet-WR-Cardinals: Doucet has a huge opportunity in front of him. With Anquan Boldin off to Baltimore, Doucet has the skills to be a perfct compliment to Larry Fitzgerald. The question, of course, is can Matty Beer Bongs get the ball to his talented offensive cast. I’m guessing no, because Leinart’s arm is similar to former Bears quarterback Steve Walsh. Warner’s loss is the biggest loss a team will feel this season, and it’s not even close.

Fred Davis-TE-Redskins: Mike Shanahan loves using the tight end in his offense (Brent Jones with the 49ers and Shannon Sharpe in Denver). Davis had a solid season last year with 48 receptions, 509 yards, and 6 touchdowns. With Donovan McNabb throwing him the ball, Davis should produce another fine season.

Chad Henne-QB-Dolphins: Bill Parcells just knows how to find quarterbacks, doesn’t he? Henne looked solid last year and should be even better in 2010. With Brandon Marshall on the outside, the Dolphins are a potential playoff team. His 12 touchdowns and 2,800+ yards last year were good numbers as a full time starter for the first time.

Shonn Greene-RB-Jets: I couldn’t care less that the Jets signed Ladainian Tomlinson this off-season. With Leon Washington in Seattle, and Thomas Jones gone, this is Greene’s show. His touchdown through the Chargers defense made me take notice last year. He will be a great fantasy option this season, and a big reason the Jets will make it back to the playoffs.

Ahh, I feel better now. I’ve gotten baseball out of my system for 2010 and it’s officially football season–no more struggling to stay awake during boring baseball games.  America’s real past time is underway. I hate to think about a potential NFL lockout a year from now, but enjoy this season and these players. Most of them should breakout and become all-pros. If they don’t, you’ll remember reading this and know who to blame.

Great article. I really think Mike Wallace and Jermichael Finley were great choices for breakout candidates. Would love to see a “Bears breakout player” article.

Thanks bro, I appreciate it. If the Bears had any players with that kind of potential I’d be more than happy to do it. I like Aromashadu, but I guess Martz doesn’t. He would be the best candidate.
