D Day For The King

LeBron James has created a lose lose situation for himself. The only way he salvages his reputation is if he stays in Cleveland or comes to the Bulls.

After two plus years of trades, salary cap managing, season tanking, and bowing to The King himself, LeBron James is finally ready to make a decision. Or, is he? The silliness of NBA free agency is mercifully nearing it’s end, and I couldn’t be happier. The past week of rumors and “people with knowledge of the situation” has been enough to make me want to take a HHH sledgehammer shot to the dome. The other dominos have fallen with the supposed “big 6″ free agents, except for the king without a throne. LeBron created this shit storm when he signed a 3 year extension on ‘06. He further added to the hysteria when he told New York reports in ‘08 “If you guys want to go to sleep and not wake up until July 1, 2010 go ahead because it’s going to be a big day.” This process has been more stressful than LeBron could have ever imagined.

Now, the time has come for James to make the biggest “decision” of his life. This is his game 7 of the NBA Finals moment. I genuinely feel like he is miserable right now because he knows deep down that no matter where he chooses to go, he’ll be pissing off millions of people. That’s what happens when you plan a spectacle of a television show. This whole recruiting process has been a train wreck. The coverage has been at an O.J. trial level. No matter what James decides to do, his image will be tarnished. The only way he can save face and remain in the discussion to be on basketball’s Mt. Rushmore would be to stay in Cleveland or join the best team that fits his game (Bulls). If he does in fact join Dwyane Wade & Chris Bosh in Miami, he’ll be viewed as a guy who had to hitch on to Wade’s back to get himself a ring. That’s already what Bosh has done. Stan Van Jeremy said it perfectly when he said Bosh was following Wade around like he was his “lapdog.”

Carlos Boozer instantly makes the Bulls a top 3 team in the East. Will this convince LeBron to join the Bulls? If LeBron wants to win rings and still be the alpha dog, then yes.

With the Bulls striking Wednesday and beating the Nets and Cavs to Carlos Boozer, the Bulls, again, put themselves in prime position to land LeBron. The Bulls as they are presently constituted are a top 3 team in the East. I would have preferred Bosh over Boozer, but the Booz cruise gives the Bulls a legit pick and roll option for Derrick Rose. The Bulls were the best pick for James before the Boozer signing. C-Booz is close to James and vowed to help bring him to Chicago. Rose has texted and called James as well. What did Rose tell James? “Every year in Cleveland with shooters, the result has been the same, why not try something a little different?” Simple and to the point. That was the Bulls’ pitch to James last Saturday. The ball is in your court King. What do you want to do?

On a day that he should be excited, The King is miserable trying to make a decision. It’s possible he knows what he wants to do, and has. All of these rumors the past two days about New York and Miami are a smokescreen by the immature cronies that LeBron considers his inner circle. The only people who know are Bron and Maverick Carter. That, I can say with confidence. I have felt since the Cavs were unceremoniously ousted by Boston in round 2 that James wanted to leave. The fact that Delonte West banged his mom certainly didn’t help matters. LeBron does feel torn about leaving the comforts of home, but again, what does he want his legacy to be?

When Maverick Carter talked about LeBron building his brand and becoming a billion dollar athlete, I don’t think they had in mind hitching on with two other all-stars on a super team. Even if the Heat were to win multiple titles, they would be considered Wade’s titles. The NBA is all about ego. Kobe hit the nail on the head when he said what title number 5 meant to him. “One more than Shaq.” That’s what it’s about. If the Heat win 3-4 titles with the super 3, Wade will still have 1 more than LeBron. I can’t see him wanting that. Would Michael or Kobe ever feel the need to join two other superstars to win a title? Hell, no. I also can’t see him playing in that God awful sports city. South Beach is a great time with beautiful women, but come on? Did LeBron not see when the Heat were making their ‘06 title run that they still didn’t sell out that arena? Oh, but Pat Riley did retire Michael Jordan’s #23 Bulls jersey down there. What sense does that make anyway? I don’t think that’s what LeBron had in mind when he wanted to pay homage to Jordan by switching to #6. Is he really going to play 2nd fiddle in a shitty sports town? Really?! Again, what does James want his legacy to be?

If you know anything about basketball you know he won’t win with the Cavs. Even if he returns to that dog shit squad, it will be different. How do you think players on that team feel right about now? It’s the same way the pre Gasol Lakers teams felt when Kobe routinely ripped into them and said he wanted out. Guys pay attention to that. You know that Antawn Jamison, Mo Williams, and CO. are thinking to themselves “what, are we not good enough for this guy?” It’s another example of how James created this monsoon and how it’s backfired completely.

LeBron grew up rooting for Michael Jordan and the Bulls. The Bulls remain his best chance to win multiple titles while still preserving his legacy. If he goes to the Heat, he's out of the best ever discussion.

I’ve long criticized James for being a me first diva (MeBron as I call him). This whole circus has fallen in line with all of the thoughts I’ve had of him. Now, would I still take him on the Bulls? Of course. The point is I think this process in low rent. I don’t want to hear about how the proceeds from tonight’s “decision” show are going to charity. What proceeds can come from this typical over hyped ESPN garbage? Like most celebrities do when they want to seem like a better person than they are…..hide behind charity. In the midst of all of the bullshit reporting that’s been going on, the guy I’d start an NBA franchise with (Kevin Durant) quietly signed a 5 year $86 million dollar extension with the Thunder yesterday. No fan fair, no tv special, no coming to my turf to have the chance to recruit me,  and no “I’m better than you” silliness. Somewhere, Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson are smiling at all of this.

No matter what path LeBron chooses tonight, people will hate him. If he stays, he’ll be viewed as a cock tease. If he bolts for Miami, he’ll be viewed as a guy who doesn’t have the balls to carry a team. If he goes to New York or the soon to be Brooklyn Nets, he’ll be all about the show and not winning. If he comes to the Bulls? Then he’ll be viewed as a villain in Cleveland and NY, but it will be what it’s always been….the best basketball decision. If he comes to the Bulls he can win multiple titles and still be the alpha dog. It’s so simple that I’m willing to bet anything he doesn’t choose the Bulls. If his choices so far this summer prove anything, he’ll somehow botch this(It’s the Maverick Carter & friends way). It’s D day for The King, and no matter what he chooses, a part of him will be miserable and wishing he handled the whole thing differently.

I just cant understand why he wouldnt pick chicago tho.. it IS the perfect fit!!!! if he goes to anyewhere besides cavs, miami or chicago ill call him MeBron..

With miami tho its like u said, d-wade runs it.. cavs cant offer anything but hed be loyal like paul pierce…and chicago?? well he may be in jordans shadow but thats an awesome shadow to be in.. and Bulls have the best roster for him to sell his brand still, for him to stand out, and honestly with lebron and boozer joining our crew, id take them over the wade-bosh miami crew in a playoff game!

I don’t think that playing in Jordan’s shadow is a factor at all in his decision to come here. If anything, it’s beneficial since he was such a huge fan. Wherever he goes, he’ll always be in Jordan’s shadow like Kobe is since he’s already in that conversation as one of the best ever (talent-wise, not through his accomplishments). Being in Jordan’s shadow is a great place to be. You never hear about Brian Cardinal playing in Jordan’s shadow.

Bill, I totally agree with you as to why he would go anywhere but here. There are so many factors…well-put together team, no other alpha-dogs, big market, not hitching his wagon to another’s star, ability to stand alone and expand his brand, and a defensive minded coach. It’s not like LBJ needs any offensive assistance.

I’m violently ill after watching all of the ESPN analyst’s dissect this shit show, but most seem to agree that Chicago makes the most sense.

    Are we too biased?

Loved the article. I’m glad you touched on the MeBron point. Don’t get me wrong but that is exactly why I have not been a big LBJ fan. From the beginning in Akron,OH when he would walk around like he was The King. What had he done at that point? Nothing. Then he had the opportunity to go to the Olympics and play basketball with some of the greatest atheletes of all time. He was still all about MeBron. And what happened…we lost. What did he do in the Olympics? Nothing. I truely believe he needs to lower his level of cockiness, and come play big ball, with what can be with a big team (again). I truly hope LBJ changes my mind by coming to the Bulls and makes me become a fan. He is one amazing basketball player.
